Now More Than Ever!

With the implementation of the Medicare Part D drug benefit, it is crucial that the interests of senior care pharmacy are adequately represented in our nations capitol, and throughout the country. The challenge of not only providing education to our members, but also educating legislators as to the value of senior care pharmacists’ services, and voicing our opinions on legislation that affects our patients and our practices requires financial resources.

Your financial contribution to the Capitol Fund, ASCP’s legislative war chest, will increase ASCP’s ability to advance advocacy efforts at the state and federal levels. Capitol Fund contributions are earmarked to implement and improve policy and advocacy programs, as well as lobbying initiatives.

What is the Difference Between ASCP-PAC and Capitol Fund?
Your ASCP Political Action Committee (ASCP-PAC) provides contributions only to political candidates - and contributions cannot be made with your corporate funds (operating funds from a corporate entity). Only personal money can be contributed to our PAC.

The Capitol Fund is just the opposite! Both personal and corporate monies can be contributed - and there are no limits. But the primary difference is that the Capitol Fund cannot be used to support candidates for public office. Instead, this vital fund is what gives your association the critical funding to do everything else with regard to our legislative advocacy work.

These are the funds that support our entire national and state advocacy activities. ASCP is the only association in the nation's capital fighting for the unique interests and concerns of consultant and senior care pharmacy. Your contributions to the ASCP Capitol Fund make it possible. As you can see by the following list of initiatives, now is a critical time to donate.

Crucial initiatives to the Capitol Fund that are earmarked for this year:

• Problems with Medicare Part D implementation: plans not honoring transition policies, inappropriate copays, incomplete beneficiary information, unpaid claims, formulary restrictions and transition issues

• Providing recognition and education on the value of Medication Therapy Management Services (MTMS)

• Supporting legislation to remove the benzodiazepine exclusion from the Medicare Part D drug benefit

• Supporting the removal of CMS regulation stating that Medicare Part D payers can choose to cover certain medications, for example: currently payers have the option to cover either citalopram or escitalopram (Lexapro®), leaving senior patients vulnerable to forced changes in their treatments that may cause harmful side effect profiles

• Any other issues that will arise involving senior care pharmacy legislation and regulation
