Marie Smith, PharmD, is a seasoned pharmacy clinician-educator, health care strategist, and change management executive with over 25 years experience across diverse practice arenas. Throughout her career, she has spanned the boundaries and pioneered progressive programs in leading universities/ health-science centers, a global pharmaceutical company, healthcare consulting practice, and a premier health professional association/publisher (print media, electronic databases, and software products).
At the University of Connecticut School of Pharmacy, she is Professor and Assistant Dean for Practice and Public Policy Partnerships. As an interdisciplinary educator and innovative leader, she brings a wealth of academic and business experience to this position, along with a strong commitment to enhancing the appropriate use of medications in society.
In the early 1980’s, as an ambulatory care clinical pharmacist/educator, she co-directed a progressive, primary care clinic for an urban/underserved patient population using a collaborative practice model with internists and nurse practitioners for chronic disease follow-up care, medication therapy management, and medication adherence services.
Dr. Smith is a graduate of the University of Connecticut and Medical College of Virginia Schools of Pharmacy, and completed a hospital pharmacy residency at Thomas Jefferson University Hospital in Philadelphia. In addition, she completed a Fellowship in Change Management at Johns Hopkins University and post-graduate work in global leadership executive education at the Wharton School (University of Pennsylvania) and INSEAD (France).
