Target Audience

This intensive, practice-based workshop is designed for pharmacists and pharmacy students, who have an interest in or are new to the provision of consultant pharmacist services in skilled nursing facilities. 

Program Description

The Fundamentals of Consultant Pharmacy Practice Certificate Program is designed to help pharmacists gain the knowledge and skills needed to be an effective consultant pharmacist. This workshop encourages participants to apply the knowledge gained in the self-study materials. In addition to reviewing the regulations pertinent to consultant pharmacy practice, faculty will assist participants as they work through "real-life" activities of the consultant pharmacist, including medication regimen reviews, preventing and correcting regulatory deficiencies, and working effectively with surveyors. Participants must have completed the self-study portion of this program, including the exam and case study, to participate in this workshop.

The program elements include:

•    A self-study-based program that requires the purchase of
ASCP's Consultant Pharmacist Handbook.
•    A live program consisting of 8 hours of interactive lecture, case studies, and role play
•    Post-program component that will focus on competencies related to consultant pharmacist services in the skilled nursing facility.

Learning Objectives

  • Describe the consultant pharmacist's role in the nursing facility.
  • Explain how the State Operations Manual (SOM) is used in nursing facilities.
  • Explain the intent of the 5 major medication-related F-Tags.
  • Identify which medications require a gradual dose reduction (GDR). Identify which medications require behavior monitoring.
  • Conduct a medication regimen review (MRR), including gathering data; identifying potential and actual medication-related problems (MRPs); prioritizing MRPs; documenting the MRR; and making recommendations to other health care providers.
  • Explain the goal of the nursing home survey.
  • Describe the consultant pharmacist's role in the survey process.

Course Requirements

Self-Study:
Participants must successfully complete self-study reading assignments and turn in completed exam answer sheet at registration of live program. A score of 70% or better on the self-study exam is necessary to meet the practice-based activity requirements.  Assignments and exam will be sent to registered participants on or about October 1, 2010.  Self-study assignments and exam are based on the required reading from the required textbooks.

Live Program
Participants must attend and actively participate in the live eight hour workshop. Participants must complete post program assignment and return required materials demonstrating work completion.

Statements of creditare provided upon completion of an evaluation of the self-study andlive program.  Information to access the evaluation will be provided inthe live program.  A certificate of recognition will be provided whenevaluations and post program materials are successfully completed.


A minimum of 20 attendees must be registered by October 1, 2010 for this workshop to be held.
