Pharmacy-Based Immunization Delivery


Description of Course


This innovative certificate training program teaches pharmacists the skills necessary to become a primary source for vaccine information and administration. This program will focus on providing pharmacists with the skills and resources necessary to establish and promote successful adult immunization services. Detailed information about routine adult immunizations will be provided in the self-study modules and re-enforced during the live training using case studies and interactive discussions. Pharmacists will be expected to practice intramuscular and subcutaneous injections on a partner during the seminar and are asked to wear clothing that will allow easy assess to the deltoid muscle. Pharmacists also must complete a self-study learning guide and assessment test prior to attending the session. A final exam will be administered at the conclusion of the program.

Learning Objectives
  • Define the pharmacist’s role in immunization advocacy, education, and administration.
  • Analyze basic immunology and its relationship to vaccination.
  • Describe microbial and immunologic characteristics of vaccine preventable diseases.
  • Demonstrate understanding of immunization schedules for both children and adults.
  • List common adverse reactions and contraindications of vaccines
  • Review the legal, regulatory, and liability issues involved with pharmacy-based immunization programs.
  • Outline documentation and record-keeping methods and requirements.
  • Explain the planning elements required to establish a pharmacy-based immunization service including storage and handling requirements for vaccines.
  • Describe general principles of emergency response to anaphylaxis.
  • Describe and demonstrate appropriate intramuscular, subcutaneous, and intranasal administration technique for adult immunization.

Successful completion of the live seminar component involves passing the final exam with a grade of 70% or higher and demonstrating competency in 2 intramuscular and 1 subcutaneous injections. Successful completion of this component will result in 8.0 contact hours of continuing education credit (0.80 CEU).

Successful completion of the self-study component involves passing the self-study assessment questions with a grade of 70% or higher and will result in 12.0 contact hours of continuing education credits (1.2 CEU).
