Evaluation of Potentially Unnecessary Ciprofloxacin Use in Long-Term Care Facilities

This study's objectives were two-fold: to examine what percentage of ciprofloxacin regimens in community facilities would meet the criteria for unnecessary drug use and the financial implications of such therapy; and to determine whether administration of drugs that may decrease ciprofloxacin absorption was more frequently associated with therapeutic failure than regimens in which this interaction was not present.

This report quantifies the prevalence of lactose as an excipient in drug regimens of ambulatory elderly patients and examines the potential for adverse effects among lactose-intolerant individuals.
