The Next Step

It’s said that life is a journey, not a destination; that being engaged in a process of constant inquiry, ceaseless exploration, and lifelong learning is the most important measure of success. As each of us moves forward in our chosen field of endeavor, we must constantly challenge ourselves to go outside our comfort zones. In the pursuit of excellence, myopic vision and business-as-usual thinking are our greatest enemies.

After five challenging and highly rewarding years on the editorial team of The Consultant Pharmacist, this month’s issue is my first as managing editor. My journey of progressively greater responsibility for the content of The Consultant Pharmacist—first as staff writer, then as associate editor, then senior editor, and now managing editor—has given me some fairly unique perspectives on the journal’s evolution, its many strengths, and areas with room for improvement.

For 13 years, The Consultant Pharmacist has been an integral part of ASCP’s steady rise to prominence as one of the most dynamic, respected organizations in all of pharmacy and health care. Now consultant pharmacists have set their sights on a new mission: senior care pharmacy—a mission defined by a redoubled commitment to take the lead in marshaling pharmaceutical care for the elderly, not just in traditional practice venues, but wherever seniors reside. The Consultant Pharmacist will be a critical vehicle for making that vision a living reality.

As we work together to advance this ambitious mission, I’ll be looking to Publisher Tim Webster, Director of Communications Robert Appel, and Editor-in-Chief Ed Davidson for the vision and insight to maintain the high standards set by outgoing Managing Editor Robin Bodishbaugh. I’ll be counting on ASCP members—those who make a difference in the lives of millions of seniors every day—to provide the broad editorial direction and nuts-and-bolts content without which no professional journal can be truly successful. And I’ll be counting on the entire readership of The Consultant Pharmacist to provide ongoing input and feedback to keep us on the right path.

I and the entire editorial team will have our work cut out for us to keep up with the most dynamic, innovative professionals in pharmacy and build on The Consultant Pharmacist’s 13-year tradition of excellence. But we won’t be going it alone: You’ll be there to guide us every step of the way, driving us take the journal to ever-greater heights of quality, utility, and credibility. Our journey will be one marked by constantly evolving signposts, many unexpected twists in the road, and no well-defined destination—only a firm commitment to keep learning, to keep reaching higher, to keep striving to make the journal the best it can be. I can hardly wait to take the next step.
