ASCP's Executive Residency in Association Management
Overview
Since 1987, the American Society of Consultant Pharmacists (ASCP) has offered a one-year program designed to provide recent pharmacy graduates an opportunity to gain experience in association management by working closely with the elected leadership and headquarters staff at ASCP.  The Executive Residency program usually begins around July 1st.

Through this interaction, the Executive Resident learns day-to-day operations, takes responsibility for specific projects, and gains experience in all aspects of association management. However, the program is loosely structured, allowing focus in a particular area if interested.

After the program, the Executive Resident will have a year of experience in preparation for a staff position in a national or state pharmacy association or other health-related organization.

Activities of the Executive Resident

Association Management
The Executive Resident will gain insight into the role of associations, relations with the Board of Directors, the process of establishing policies and guidelines, organizational structure, and strategic planning. The Executive Resident will also attend Joint Commission of Pharmacy Practitioners meetings, staff a leadership group, and attend other internal and external meetings related to association management and pharmacy practice.

Administration
The Executive Resident will learn about personnel and financial management, with emphasis on the resident's budget development process.

Communications & Publications
The Executive Resident will come to understand the preparation process, philosophy, and purpose of ASCP publications; write articles for the journal or newsletter; and assist with product development and marketing.

Educational Affairs
The Executive Resident will participate in continuing education activities, learn the ACPE continuing education provider process, and assist in speaker recruitment and educational session planning for meetings.

Government Affairs & Advocacy
The Executive Resident will attend congressional hearings and learn about proposed rules and regulations that impact the pharmacy profession.

Meetings & Conventions
The Executive Resident will learn the many details in planning, managing and evaluating a successful meeting or convention and will participate in the annual meeting, legislative conference, and midyear conference.

Professional Practice & Member Visits
The Executive Resident will have the opportunity to visit ASCP members and their facilities, and interact with both members and non-members on a variety of professional issues. This will help the resident understand the basic operations of these facilities and how pharmacists benefit from the products and services of ASCP.
