Board Certification: Geriatric Pharmacy

Since 1969, the American Society of Consultant Pharmacists (ASCP) has been educating pharmacy professionals on how to best address the unique medication needs of older adults. That’s nearly 50 years of geriatric pharmacotherapy expertise. ASCP uses that experience to provide training to pharmacists studying for the Board Certified Geriatric Pharmacist (BCGP) examination or obtaining recertification credits.

We are ready to help you be the best senior care pharmacist. Below is information on becoming a BCGP and recertifying.

In 1997, ASCP created the Commission for Certification in Geriatric Pharmacy (CCGP), a nonprofit corporation autonomous from ASCP, to develop and oversee the Certified Geriatric Pharmacist credential. In 2017, the credential moved to the Board of Pharmacy Specialties (BPS), making the Board Certified Geriatric Pharmacist (BCGP) credential the second largest pharmacy specialty.

Board certification is recognized as the gold standard to determine which pharmacists are qualified to contribute at advanced practice levels. Certification in geriatric pharmacy shows that a pharmacist understands the complex medication needs of older adults with multiple comorbidities and geriatric syndromes. Pharmacists with the BCGP credential have reported a number of benefits, including qualification for expanded scope of practice, salary increase, promotion, and new job opportunities. The BCGP credential is ideal for pharmacists who provide medication therapy management (MTM) services to older adults.
