The STAMP Out Prescription Drug Misuse & Abuse! Tool Kit was developed by the ASCP Foundation to educate seniors, caregivers, families, and community-based senior services providers about prescription drug misuse and abuse in older adults, and provide easy-to-implement tips to ensure safe medication use.
Although illicit drug use is relatively rare among older adults compared to younger adults and adolescents, there is increasing evidence that prescription drug misuse and abuse is a growing problem in the older population. People over the age of 65 take more medications (prescription and over-the-counter) than any other age group. Because seniors also take more potentially addictive medications than other age groups, it is not surprising that prescription drug abuse is second only to alcohol abuse among older adults.
The STAMP Out Prescription Drug Misuse & Abuse! Tool Kit contains all the components needed to deliver a successful presentation to older adults, families, caregivers and community-based senior services providers. There is also a presentation suitable for health care professionals. The Tool Kit Outline describes the contents.
Updated January 2013 Spanish versions of most STAMP Out content are now available.
