As part of my leadership plan I called for the creation of an Educational Standards Taskforce to address the need for geriatric pharmacy educational training requirements in schools of pharmacy, and PGY1 ASHP accredited residency programs. The American Association of Colleges of Pharmacy is currently undergoing a once-a decade update to the Center for the Advancement of Pharmaceutical Education Outcomes. This document guides all schools of pharmacy in curricular development. ASCP faced a time-sensitive need to provide the CAPE Commission with specific geriatric pharmacy educational outcomes. I am writing to share the work of this taskforce with everyone who shares an interest in geriatric pharmacy education. Included with the letter is an annotated bibliography of literature outlining the need to enhance geriatric education among pharmacists and all health care professionals in order meet the needs of our aging population.
To further strengthen the need for geriatric pharmacy educational standards, please consider signing onto a petition on behalf of the American Society of Consultant Pharmacists and geriatric faculty across the United States in support of our submission to AACP.
