Continuous Glucose Monitoring: A Sweet Overview of Use in Older Adults

Continuous glucose monitoring (CGM) can improve glycemic outcomes and quality of life for older adults with diabetes. With Medicare’s expansion of coverage for CGM supplies, more older adults have access to this technology. Pharmacists can appropriately counsel older adults on CGM technology by knowing the benefits and challenges with CGM use in this population. Pharmacists can also optimize diabetes treatment plans for older adults with analysis of CGM data using patient-centered goals of care.

Learning Objectives

At the conclusion of this application-based activity, participants should be able to:

  • Provide counseling to older adults who are indicated for continuous glucose monitoring (CGM)
  • Analyze CGM data using patient-centered goals of care
  • Develop a plan to optimize diabetes management for an older adult using CGM

Target Audience

Senior Care Pharmacists who provide expert advice on the use of medications to individuals and older adults and are committed to providing person-centered care, considering the complex interrelationships between disease states, nutrition, medications, and other variables.
